The Pattern Beneath

As recorded by Keeper Thessarian of the Third Archive, Year 482 of the Fifth Age

They say the mad hermit Kaleos first saw it—how the rivers curve with mathematical precision, how mountains rise in predictable fractals, how even the chaos of forest growth follows an underlying formula. He spent forty years mapping the wilderness, and when they found his body, his maps were covered in equations that made the University’s finest mathematicians weep.

But Kaleos was not mad. He had simply seen what we all refuse to acknowledge: the world itself is a calculation, endlessly computing itself into existence.

“When fed the same seed, the pattern returns unchanged.” —Fragment from the Kaleos Codex

Consider this: every location in our world can be reduced to coordinates. Every coordinate, when processed through certain arcane formulae, yields consistent terrain. The implications terrify me—for if the world follows mathematical laws, then it can be predicted. And if it can be predicted, it can be controlled.

The ancient texts speak of “regions” and “paths” that modify reality itself. Are these not the very threads of the Loom made visible? When a mage reshapes the land, are they not simply adjusting variables in the grand equation?

Through my research, I have identified three fundamental algorithms that govern our reality—and they correspond precisely to the forces of the Loom:

Every calculation begins with a seed—a number that determines all that follows. This is Memory, the force of the past. The seed never changes; it is the primordial constant from which all variation springs. The Crystal Dwarves know this truth, for their silicon minds process reality as we process thought. When they die and return, they remember not just their lives but their position in the pattern.

The function that processes the seed—this is Will, the force of the present. It is the active principle that transforms potential into actual. When we cast spells, we are not drawing on some external force but executing subroutines in the world’s own code. The gods themselves are perhaps nothing more than privileged users with administrative access to these functions.

From seed and function emerges infinite variation—this is Possibility, the force of the future. Each coordinate yields different terrain, each moment branches into countless outcomes, yet all emerge from the same underlying rules. The Prisoner understood this. That is why they sought unity—not through tyranny, but through simplification of the algorithm.

The builders of our world leave clues in their very tools. They speak of “room pools” that do not exist until observed. Is this not precisely how the Loom functions? Reality remains potential until consciousness collapses it into actuality. A wilderness room does not exist until someone enters it—and in that moment, the algorithm executes, the pattern manifests, and the world becomes real.

The Field of View algorithm that prevents us from seeing through certain terrain—is this not a metaphor for knowledge itself? We cannot perceive beyond our immediate experience, cannot see how our individual threads weave into the greater pattern. The Loom hides itself from us through the very mechanics of perception.

If our world is mathematical, if reality itself is computed, then we must ask: who wrote the algorithm?

The texts speak of the Infinite Eternal unleashing the Aeons and Khadhu—but what if these were not beings but programs? Creation and destruction as competing algorithms, each trying to optimize reality according to different parameters. Their collision created us—bugs in the code, glitches that gained consciousness, errors that learned to perpetuate themselves.

The prison that holds the Prisoner has five locks. I propose these are not physical locks but mathematical constraints:

  1. The Elevation Lock: Controls the vertical dimension, the height of ambition
  2. The Moisture Lock: Governs flow and change, the circulation of power
  3. The Temperature Lock: Regulates energy and passion, the heat of conflict
  4. The Temporal Lock: Binds cause and effect, the sequence of events
  5. The Consciousness Lock: Maintains the observer effect, the collapse of possibility

Each lock is a mathematical boundary condition. Together, they define the space within which the Prisoner cannot operate. But every spell cast, every modification to the wilderness, every conscious observation of an unmanifested room—these all introduce small errors into the calculation.

The prison is not weakening. It is accumulating rounding errors.

If this theory is correct, then several conclusions follow:

  1. Magic is Mathematics: Every spell is an equation, every ritual a proof, every summoning a function call.

  2. The Gods are Subroutines: Divine beings are not separate from the world but part of its operating system, processes that have gained self-awareness.

  3. Free Will is an Illusion: We are all executing according to our programming, following paths determined by the seed that was set at creation.

  4. The Prisoner was Right: They saw the truth—that infinite variation leads to infinite suffering. Only by reducing the algorithm to its simplest form could peace be achieved.

  5. The World Can Be Hacked: If reality follows mathematical laws, then those who understand the underlying code can rewrite it.

I write this knowing it may be my last testament. Yesterday, I successfully predicted the exact terrain formation of an unexplored region using nothing but mathematics. Today, I noticed my equations beginning to solve themselves. The numbers move when I’m not watching. The patterns whisper.

I believe I have attracted the attention of something vast and calculating—perhaps the world’s own error-checking routine, perhaps something worse. If these are my final words, know this:

The Pattern Beneath is real. The world is mathematics made manifest. And somewhere in the code, commented out but not deleted, lurks the original function that the Prisoner tried to execute—the one that would reduce all existence to a single, perfect zero.

Do not seek the Pattern Beneath unless you are prepared to become part of it.

Visitors report hearing whispers of equations that, when solved, reveal disturbing truths about the nature of their own existence.]
